Artist, born in 1984 in Yamanashi. Lives and works in Hokkaido. Focusing on place, history, and characteristics of people involved, Fukasawa has engaged in projects throughout Japan that explore modes of coexistence with others. Recent international activities include participation in the Thailand Biennale 2018 in Krabi, southern Thailand. In Japan, working with Harmony, an outpatient facility in Tokyo for those with mental disorders, Fukasawa carried out the project Kamimachi Harmonyland (2018, TURN) on the theme of users’ multiple realities and beliefs. He produced Myths, Continued (2017, Oku-Noto Triennale) in a community home to many legends of deities that drifted ashore from the sea, and erected a shrine that enshrined floating debris as the contemporary equivalent of these deities. Hitachi-Satake City (2016, Kenpoku Art) aimed to secure sovereignty and culture for citizens by reconnecting the buried history of the area to the present age. In Echigo-Tsumari Homestay Museum (2015, 6th Echigo-Tsumari Art Field), visitors stayed overnight in a rural/agricultural area and collected region-specific materials related to modernization. He organized Tokuino Bank (2011-, Toride Art Project), through which people use their areas of proficiency at as units of exchange rather than money, and in 2008 he and Ichirota Suzuki organized Takeshi Culture Center at the non-profit organization Creative Support Let’s.
