A journey to meet our future selves
Taking place in Oshika Peninsula and Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture,
Reborn-Art Festival offers visitors opportunities to enjoy art, music, and food.

At the second edition of the festival in 2019,
seven teams of curators work with various artists to
create art while thinking about “Texture of Life” in each area.

In this place, which is in the process of being reborn,
visitors can encounter values and people they would not find anywhere else.
They may even meet new versions of themselves for the first time.

of the region’s future

Working with seven teams of curators, about 60 diverse artists or groups will present their works in seven areas. Artists who have encountered the memories of the people and land in various regions, and experienced their abundance, strength, severity and kindness, will communicate diverse messages and reveal unknown worlds.
MUSIC

Music fused with
art and community

Starting with the opening performance Rolling Lyrics, there will be various musical events including the opera Kenji in Four Dimensions – The Final Edition, a fantastical concert on a tranquil beach, and a Bon-odori midsummer festival where everyone joins in traditional dances. The music performed by diverse musicians in abundant natural surroundings will fuse with the sites and with works of visual art, making the festival more impressive.

Texture of Life

Traces of the unprecedented disaster caused by nature’s wrath are still visible all around the Tohoku region of northeast Japan. But we should not describe what happened in the region only in negative ways. Indeed, transforming the negative into the positive is what has shaped this art festival, which is organized around the concept of “reborn” art as a means of living. At the first festival in 2017, people’s ideas and connections were newly born in various forms through art.

For the festival’s second edition in 2019, we will explore this theme of “Texture of Life.” The conditions under which we live in contemporary society, not least the uncontrollable economy, seem to take us further and further from the true essence of life. I hope visitors will come to see these artworks filled with the vitality that is unique to Ishinomaki, artworks that bring us into contact profoundly with the roots of humanity, and experience their forward-looking dynamism that discovers new positives.
