Takefumi Shibuya
Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1994. Based in Yamagata. Completed the graduate course with a major in arts and culture, the Graduate School, Tohoku University of Art and Design. He is a member of Yamagata Geijutsu Kaiwai, a group of artist- activists. Being a judo athlete in college, he experienced a culture peculiar to the world of athletes. In recent years, he examines relationships between those who are trained hard and those who train others. He made film works using different forms in martial arts. He connects “training” related to the forms in judo such as “shoulder throw” and “joint locks” with subtle stories in art history or war-related historic landmarks while putting them in connection with his own physicality and an aspect of recording by media. He thus tries “shoulder throw” in art. His exhibitions include “Yama no youna 100 monogatari” (100 stories like mountains) in “Yamagata Biennale” 2018 at Tohoku University of Art and Design (Yamagata, 2018), “Dirtied Blue Judo-gi” at Chuo Honsen Gallery (Tokyo, 2018), and “Yokei to Yodan: Yutori no Shikumi” (Excess and Digression: Structure of having room to breathe) at Kake Museum of Art (Okayama, 2015). Awarded Good Work Prize at the 3rd CAF Art Award.
